Gov. Kemp Suspends Georgia Mayor After Arrest for Leaving Alcohol in Ditch for Inmates

Thomson Mayor Suspended Amid Controversy Over Alleged Alcohol Delivery to Inmates

In a surprising turn of events, the mayor of Thomson, a small town in Georgia, has been suspended following serious allegations involving the provision of alcohol to state prison inmates. Benjamin "Benji" Cary Cranford, 52, was indicted in August and subsequently arrested by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) on felony charges. These charges include furnishing prohibited items to inmates and attempting to commit a felony.

The Incident Unfolds

The incident that led to Cranford’s legal troubles reportedly took place on June 3. According to the GBI, Cranford drove to a local store and purchased a bottle of Seagram’s Extra Dry Gin. Instead of keeping the alcohol for personal use, he allegedly left it in a ditch along Cobbham Road, strategically placed for a work crew of state prisoners from the Jefferson County Correctional Institution to access. This act raised immediate concerns about the mayor’s judgment and integrity.

Just days after the incident, the Thomson Police Department requested the GBI to investigate the allegations surrounding Cranford’s actions. The investigation quickly escalated, leading to Cranford’s arrest after a city council meeting in August. He was booked into the McDuffie County Jail and later released on a $5,000 bail.

Official Suspension by Governor Kemp

In light of the serious nature of the charges, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp took decisive action. On September 9, he issued an executive order suspending Cranford from his position as mayor. This suspension came after the governor’s office received the indictment on August 20. The order also appointed members to a review commission tasked with determining whether the indictment adversely affected Cranford’s ability to fulfill his duties as mayor.

Cranford had only recently taken office, having won the election against incumbent Kenneth Usry the previous year. His suspension marks a significant shift in leadership for the small town, which is now left to navigate the implications of this controversy.

Review Commission Findings

The review commission conducted a thorough investigation and submitted a report to Governor Kemp on October 1. Their findings indicated that the indictment was indeed affecting Cranford’s administration and the public’s rights and interests. Based on this report, the commission recommended that Cranford be suspended from his duties as mayor.

As a result, Cranford’s suspension is effective immediately and will remain in place until the final resolution of his case or until the expiration of his term, whichever occurs first. This decision underscores the seriousness with which the state is treating the allegations against him.

Community Reaction

The community of Thomson has been left in shock by the unfolding events. Residents are grappling with the implications of having their mayor embroiled in such a scandal. The situation raises questions about leadership, accountability, and the expectations placed on public officials. As the legal proceedings continue, the town will be watching closely to see how this situation develops and what it means for their local governance.

Looking Ahead

As the case progresses, it remains to be seen how Cranford will respond to the charges and what the future holds for him and the town of Thomson. The legal ramifications of his actions could have lasting effects on the community and its leadership structure. For now, the town is in a state of uncertainty, awaiting further developments in this unusual and troubling saga.
